Dear Alumni and Friends of Southern Illinois University,

Southern Illinois University has a long and proud tradition in graduate education and research. We are a Carnegie Research University that offers 75 masters and more than 30 doctoral programs. The Graduate School has more than 4,200 students from throughout the United States and 90 countries; and I am pleased to report we have 60 Fulbright students this year.

Are you a graduate of SIU? Take a moment to reflect on your days in Graduate School here. Remember the long days in Morris Library, hours upon hours in labs, countless meetings and the joy of graduation. Graduate School at SIU Carbondale prepared you for the life you enjoy today. Guess what, we do the same today, and will do the same tomorrow and into the future. Methods change, but our mission is the same. We prepare those with bright minds for the future.

Graduate School is not easy. Every one of our students is being stretched in many different directions at once. How much did you pay for this experience? Was it less than $1,000 a year, maybe $2,000 or even $3,000? Today graduate students pay $11,043 a year in tuition and fees. In addition, there are expenses for food, clothing, shelter and books, and books, and books.

The Graduate School does its best to support our students. More than half of them receive some funding from teaching, research and administrative assistantships and fellowships. This is not a free ride. Our students work hard for their money. They count on us, and we count on them. For example, they play a key role in the implementation of SIU Carbondale's Undergraduate Research program. This program involves high achieving undergraduate students in research efforts early on in their academic careers. Results from this new program are very exciting.

I am very fortunate. I have the pleasure of working with bright, excited, driven students on a
daily basis. The university is doing everything it can to support these young people who are
